Expanding our Capabilities

By Caitlin Wilson 9 October 2020

This month we are building a greenhouse so we can start seedlings in the late winter/early spring. We started by building a form for the base and securing it to the ground with 5 foot sections of rebar. The base shouldn’t move anywhere!

Next we laid down a geotextile fabric to keep weeds from growing up through the gravel base. After the gravel was delivered, we spread the gravel with the tractor and by hand as needed.

We made 2 arches for the ends and a middle supporting arch out of plywood. These were VERY heavy so we used the forks on the tractor to transport them across the yard and to prop them up while we installed temporary bracing.

Greenhouse framing in progress

This weekend we will be framing the ends for doors, windows, and fans as well as smoothing some of the dips in the gravel. After that, we need to put in the PVC supports so we can put up the plastic!
