While this gourd is edible in the early stages of growth, it is primarily grown for use as a biodegradable sponge. This vining plant can reach heights up to 30 feet if it is happy. Each vine produces multiple luffa gourds which take most of the summer to mature. As the luffa matures, the skin peels away from the inner mesh. Once the vines/gourds start to dry, they are ready to be harvested. You can then peel the outer skin off and allow the inner mesh to dry in the sun. You can then cut the luffa into sections and use as you would a sponge.
Planting/Harvesting Notes
- Plant after all chance of frost has passed in an area that receives full sun
- Plant vines on a tall trellis for best results
- Matures in 120-130 days
- Pick and peel the outer coating once the luffa is lighter and the skin has started to shrink/dry. Discard the skin and allow the inner mesh to dry in the sun to prevent mold.
Seed keeping notes
-
Once the luffa is dried, the seed can be found in the middle of the mesh.
-
Remove the seeds from this inner pocket and allow to air dry in a cool dry place.
-
Store in a labeled paper envelope.
