Mary Washington Asparagus

This heirloom variety produces plenty of uniform spears in from April to May. The plants can have roots between 10 to 15 feet deep! This makes this vegetable very long lived so plant your crowns in a spot that will be undisturbed for years to come. Plants are self pollinating.

Planting/Harvesting Notes

To plant asparagus crowns: Select a site with good sunlight and drainage. Clear the site of weeds. Dig a trench 6 inches deep and 18 inches wide. Place 1 inch of finished compost in your trench and cover the compost with 1 inch of native top soil. Then spread crowns face up in the trench and cover crowns with 2 inches of soil. Continue to cover the crowns as the fronds develop until the trench is filled in. After the first season, cut the asparagus lightly. After the second year you can harvest more asparagus. If planting seedlings, do not harvest until the second and third seasons.
