Orange Leysa (Capsicum annuum)

Photo via Forgotten Herilooms

This pepper was brought from Ukraine by Ivanna Bilous. She selectively bred this pepper over time for its light orange coloration. These peppers have a pointy heart shape with thick flesh and a sweet, fruity flavor with no heat at all. These peppers can be used as a bell pepper substitute and are great for stuffing, roasting, pickling, and fresh eating. The plants grow over 2 feet tall and require staking to keep the peppers off the ground.

Planting/Harvesting Notes

    Seed Saving

To save seed, allow the pepper to turn yellow on the plant, then harvest, cut the pepper, scrape out the seeds and dry on a flat surface such as a screen, paper plate or baking sheet. Allow to dry for 1-2 weeks and then store in a paper envelope.
