Fastigiata Pin Stiriped Peanut (Arachis hypogaea)

You can find additional photos and information at True Love Seeds

This beautiful peanut has tones of pink, purple and brown. It’s truly a sight to behold! The plant grows as a small bush with many runners, where the peanuts are actually produced. These plants have a low growing habit and don’t tolerate competition well so keep them well weeded so they can spread. These peanuts come from Ecuador and the Shuar people have traditionally kept this seed. They are indigenous to the Transkutuku Amazon region.

Peanuts are legumes (nitrogen fixers) so they add nitrogen back into the soil as they grow. They also are a bit unique in how they grow. They actually flower twice. The first flowers are sterile, but the second time the plant flowers, the flowers will turn into roots and bury themselves in the soil. This second flower becomes the peanut later in the season! Once the plant starts to die back in the fall, it is ready for harvest!

Planting/Harvesting Notes

  • Plant in full sun in well draining soil.
  • Loose soil is best to allow the flowers to become peanuts
  • Keep areas well weeded to reduce competition for the plants
  • Keep well watered
  • Once the plant starts to yellow in the fall, gently pull the entire plant out of the ground, shake off excess dirt, and hang to dry for 1-2 weeks. After plant is dried, store peanuts in shell until ready to eat or plant.

Seed saving notes

Store seeds in the shell if saving for growing later. Store in a cool dry place. Once ready to plant, crack the shells and plant the peanut in soil.
