How do I know if my cantaloupe is ripe?

Cantaloupe won’t ripen off the vine so it’s important to know when your melon is ripe. The best way to tell if a cantaloupe is ripe is by smell and by sight. The melon will smell very sweet even from several feet away and the color under the netting will change from green to orange.

There are two pictures of a small cantaloupe sitting on the ground. The photo on the left shows a melon that has started to ripen but it is a mix of green and yellow under the netting. The photo on the right shows a fully ripened melon with a solid light orange color under the netting.
Notice how the unripe melon is starting to ripen but has a lot of green still under the netting. The ripe melon shows a solid orange color under the netting and is ready to be picked.
