Russian tarragon is a member of the daisy family and is native to Russia. Russian tarragon has a milder flavor than french tarragon, but it can be grown from seed and is very hardy in the winter. The leaves are used in pickling for the slight anise and licorice flavor. Russian tarragon is also drought tolerant.
Planting/Harvesting Notes
Space plants 18 to 24 inches apart. Plant in full sun in a dry, well draining location. Russian tarragon is subject to root rot so make sure your soil doesn’t remain overly wet. Russian tarragon grows fast. To avoid crowding, divide or thin the plant yearly. To enhance flavor, pince off the flowers as they develop.
