While chocolate mint smells like a hint of chocolate when you brush the plant, it tastes more similar to spearmint to us. This mint would be an excellent addition to baked goods, desserts, or teas. You could use this as a stand alone tea or combined with black tea. The leaves have a beautiful dark green center with golden brown edges and the stems of this plant turn dark brown/purple in the sun.
Planting/Harvesting Notes
Mint will spread aggressively. If you don’t wish for this to happen, it is best to plant in a large container or raised bed. It can be used as an excellent ground cover in a partly shaded to full sun area. The plant will produce more essential oils in full sun. Be sure to plant in a moist area or be sure to mulch your soil to retain moisture. Mint does not like to be dried out and can often be found near streams or rivers.
