There are two types of chamomile, Roman and German. The German variety is often used to aid sleep and digestive issues. While German chamomile is an annual, it self seeds readily so you will likely seed it come back yearly if you don’t dead head the flowers regularly. Chamomile is also drought tolerant once established.
Planting/Harvesting Notes
- Pick an area with full sun and well draining soil.
- Harvest and dry flowers for use in teas
- Dead head any spent flowers to encourage more blooms.
- If the plant becomes leggy during midsummer, trim 4 inches of the top of the stems to encourage more flower blooms.
- Trim several inches off the stem after harvesting the flowers to encourage more growth.
- If growing in a container, choose a container that is at least 6 inches deep.
- If you wish to overwinter chamomile, put in a container and move inside before the first freeze. The plant will not survive a freeze.
