Catnip is a member of the mint family. This particular mint family member is beloved by cats. It makes them go wild. Be aware that some cats love this herb so much that they will lie on it, roll on it, and eat it to the point where any surrounding plants will be destroyed. Be sure to plant this plant away from other plants you love if you have a cat.
Planting/Harvesting Notes
Catnip will spread aggressively. If you don’t wish for this to happen, it is best to plant in a large container or raised bed. It can be used as an excellent ground cover in a partly shaded to full sun area. The plant will produce more essential oils in full sun. Be sure to plant in a moist area or be sure to mulch your soil to retain moisture. Catnip does not like to be dried out and can often be found near streams or rivers.
