Wild blue phlox is a native perennial that produces beautiful five petal, blue flowers. The flowers are shaped like starbursts. This plant will get up to 2 feet tall and readily self seeds and reproduces by rhizomes. This plant blooms between late March to early May. Once established, it is drought tolerant and it is adaptable to clay or loamy soil. This plant can be weedy looking after it blooms, so be sure to learn to identify it so you don’t accidentally pull it!
Planting/Harvesting Notes
- Plant in a shady area with well drained soil.
- Leave 8 inches on either side of the plant to allow for growth
- The flowers attract clearwing moths, butterflies, and hummingbirds.
- These plants will self sow, but they are not aggressive and seedlings are easily transplanted.
