Blue Flax (Linum usitatissimum)

Additional images and information via True Love Seeds

Blue flax is a beautiful, low maintenance plant that is valued for it’s beauty as well as it’s use to make cloth and medicine. The seeds can be used to make linseed oil or can be eaten whole. They are rich in omega-3s and other nutrients. You can also cultivate this plant for crafting linen. It has been used in the UK and Ireland since the 11th century for clothing.

Planting/Harvesting Notes

  • Plant in an area with full sun.
  • Water well until established. Once established, the plants require little maintenance
  • Harvest when pods are brown and you can hear the seeds rattle in their pods when you shake them. Harvest by uprooting the whole plant or cutting the stem at the base and then hang until dried completely (usually this takes a few weeks).
